Birthday, Suzhou, and Helen leaving
Saturday, June 19th, 2004Hi. It’s been a while since I wrote anything on here. Been busy with work, and my friend Toshi has been visiting for a week.
Based on the number of birthday e-mails I received, only about 4 people even realized it was my birthday (outside of Shanghai, that is), but I have some pictures to prove that the event does still exist. Check out my gallery if you’re interested.
I also took a trip to Suzhou, a city about an hour outside of Shanghai by train. It was formerly known as the “Venice of the East” because it had some canals, but I don’t know if I’d really go that far. I used to live with an Italian and she’d probably get pissed to hear that.
Tonight, I’m going to a farewell dinner for one of my friends, Helen. She’s actually an original friend of my little brother’s but we became friends once she moved out here. I’ll definitely miss her, but I get the feeling she might return after taking a little break back in the U.S. Let’s keep our hopes up anyways.
Living in a foreign country, people are always coming and going. Making new friends is always great, but having friends leave is conversely just as bad. Everyone makes plans to see each other and keep in touch, but in the real world it just isn’t that easy. I hate ending on a bit of a depressing note, but I just want to add that that’s one of the reasons I created this website, so others can see me, see how I’m doing, even if I’m unable to do the same to them. We’re never apart, just further than we were before.
